Background of the study
The rapid evolution of digital technology has significantly transformed the landscape of conference interpretation. In recent years, Igbo simultaneous interpretation has increasingly incorporated advanced tools such as computer-assisted interpretation software, wireless earpieces, and real-time speech-to-text algorithms. These technologies aim to enhance the speed and accuracy of translation during high-stakes conferences where multiple languages converge. The integration of technology is viewed as a means to overcome the limitations of human interpreters by providing immediate linguistic support and reducing cognitive load (Okoro, 2023). However, while these digital solutions offer promising improvements, they also introduce challenges such as software errors, latency issues, and difficulties in capturing regional dialects and culturally nuanced expressions. Moreover, the effectiveness of these technologies is influenced by factors such as interpreter familiarity, technical training, and system reliability during live events (Ifeanyi, 2024). This study appraises the influence of technology on Igbo simultaneous interpretation by analyzing recorded conference sessions, interviewing professional interpreters, and assessing the performance of various digital tools in real time. By examining both the benefits and the pitfalls of technological integration, the research seeks to provide recommendations that will help optimize interpretation quality while maintaining the cultural and linguistic integrity of the Igbo language.

Statement of the problem
Despite significant investments in translation technology, challenges remain in achieving reliable Igbo simultaneous interpretation in conferences. Technical glitches, such as delayed signal processing and inaccuracies in speech recognition, can compromise the clarity of interpretation (Okoro, 2023). Additionally, many interpreters lack specialized training on these systems, resulting in inconsistent performance and potential misinterpretation of culturally sensitive content (Ifeanyi, 2024). These issues can lead to communication breakdowns during critical exchanges, affecting both the efficiency of conference proceedings and the overall message fidelity. The study aims to identify the specific technological and human factors that impede optimal interpretation performance and to propose strategies for enhancing system integration and interpreter training.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of current digital tools on Igbo simultaneous interpretation.
  2. To identify technical and training-related challenges affecting interpretation quality.
  3. To propose recommendations for improved integration of technology in interpretation settings.

Research questions:

  1. How do current digital tools affect the quality of Igbo simultaneous interpretation?
  2. What technical or human-related challenges hinder optimal performance?
  3. What strategies can enhance the effective use of technology in interpretation?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the dual role of technology in enhancing and complicating Igbo simultaneous interpretation. The findings will be valuable for conference organizers, interpretation service providers, and technology developers, informing improvements in both digital tools and interpreter training programs. Ultimately, the research seeks to ensure that technology serves as an aid rather than a barrier to accurate communication, thereby supporting more effective and culturally respectful conference interactions (Okoro, 2023; Ifeanyi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the influence of technology on Igbo simultaneous interpretation in formal conference settings. It does not extend to other forms of interpretation or informal communication environments.

Definitions of terms:

  • Simultaneous interpretation: The real-time oral translation of speech from one language to another.
  • Digital tools: Technological devices and software used to facilitate interpretation.
  • Interpretation quality: The accuracy and clarity with which spoken content is rendered into another language.
